This play has a king, a queen, a herd of princes and princesses, clowns, hand puppets, a giant fairy godmother, people with gigantic noses, and a three-headed monster named Mad Marsha…and everybody speaks! Each of nine princesses has some unpleasant character flaw. Nancy is too nervous, Lillian is too loud, Lois is forever getting lost, Sheila is smelly and won't bathe, etc. Their father, King Steve, has thrown a big party and invited every eligible suitor he can think of in hopes that one or two of the girls will get married to a rich prince and save the castle (the mortgage is due). A giant fairy godmother named Mogo arrives and magically sends all the girls off with two missions: First, each must correct her personal flaw and second, each must find someone to love and marry. They have one year. The rest of the play is basically each princess's adventure. Little kids have fun, adults have fun, and high school kids have a blast. It's also pretty easy to rehearse. Although there are 70 kids, there are only 11 scenes: the opening, the closing, and the nine individual princess scenes, each of which features between 4 and 10 actors. Of my colleagues who have produced this show, each has produced it multiple times. One recent production was held at the American International School of Zagreb, Croatia using the entire lower school. It's a great program builder and the perfect show for the year when you have a lot of strong girls.
