The play follows a day in the life of a mute, homeless man who is forced, literally, to beg for change in the subway. On this day, however, through some interaction with a young girl and her pushy stage mother, he finds a spark of inspiration and, through a series of touching, comic, violent, and very truthful scenes, begins to re-establish contact with the rest of the world. Plenty of funny stuff, but very accessible, real characters as well. This play won the Virginia Theatre Association and the Southeastern Theatre Conference competitions in 1999-2000. Five years later, with a completely different cast it placed 2nd in the Virginia High School League State competition. Widely produced in schools throughout Virginia and was produced as an award-winning short film in 2008. The lead role, Homeless Guy, is a real tour de force and has led to best actor honors for many of the kids who have played it. Minimal scenery.
