Mask work is a really great way to get young actors to understand the physical elements of acting, so in 1994 this piece was written to give students a culminating performance for their mask project. The story is that of a tour bus driver from a small town in Mexico. He falls asleep at the wheel and wrecks the bus. All the passengers die, but he survives. Although he bears tremendous guilt, in hisvillage, he's treated as someone touched by God and elevated to celebrity status. This all happens in mask, of course, with the twelve dead passengers, acting as a sort of chorus, offering commentary on the action and morality throughout. This is a very different play kind of play but has proven effective with both audience and student actors. The original performance advanced to the VHSL Regional play festival, was revived in 1997 for a showcase performance at the Virginia Theatre Association Secondary School Play Competition and has been performed by a variety of schools over the years. Minimal scenery.
